PARENTS TEACHERS MEET

Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized Parents Teachers Meet for I and II year on 25.03.2023 at 9.00 A.M.  The main objective of the meeting is to create a common platform, where teachers and parents come together to discuss student’s performance and devise ways to enrich their learning experience. The class in-charge explained the student’s attendance, CIA- I marks and discussed on the semester course implementation and progress. The progress report of I and II year students was intimated to the parents. The PTA meeting came to an end with the conclusion that the progress and development of the students depends on the joint effort of parents and teachers. Totally, 50 students came with their parents and attended the PTA meet.

Peer Teaching

Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a peer teaching session for I MCHM students on March 22, 2023. Akash. R, Samuel. M and Subash. G of II MCHM presented the topic “SAVE WATER, SAVE LIFE”. They talked on how water is more essential component to quench thirst or protect health; it is also vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development. The session enabled to learn more on water-related issues, be inspired to tell others and take action to make a difference. At the end of the session, the students took pledge for saving water. This peer teaching session helped the students build their confidence and communication.

Workshop on “CUISINE FRANCHISE”

Francophone Day is celebrated every year on March 20, 2023. In order to celebrate the day, HEN Association of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a one-day workshop on “CUISINE FRANCAISE”. Mr. C. Suresh Kumar, HoD and Mr. P. Anand, Assistant Professor, Department of MC&HM guided students to prepare a French meal as hands-on-practice. A brief presentation for the students on how to get started in the day-to-day operations of a busy restaurant, and basic knowledge of the herbs and various flavors used in French cuisine were explained. They prepared a variety of French dishes such as Nicoise salads, shrimp cocktail, French onion soup, Roasted chicken, beef bourguignon, caramel custard, crepe suzette and onion & mushroom tart. It was a very interesting program that gave students a great learning experience. Totally, 33 students from II MCHM actively participated in this workshop.

Fruit Art and Vegetable Sculpture Workshop

Mr. K Saththivel (22127), Mr. S Vishal S (22133) from I year and II year students, Mr. K B Karthick Babu (21124), and Mr. A Kasi Natan (21125) of the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management actively participated in the “Fruit Art and Vegetable carving Workshop” conducted by the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, on 11.03.2023. They also gave hands-on-practice for the student to carve 4 and 5 petal flowers in radish, carrot, cucumber, beet root, and watermelon face arts. They also made vegetables and flower carved bouquet arrangements for reception hall. This workshop gave a lot of memorable experience, motivation and encouragement to the students.

Field Trip-Keezhadi Museum, Sivaganga District

On 11.03.2023, Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management went on a field trip to the Keezhadi Museum, Sivaganga District with the I and II year students (57 students). The students became aware of the museum as a testimony to the regional life lived by ancient Tamils during the Sangam Age. The excavations underscored the fact that an urban civilization existed in Tamil Nadu since the Sangam Age, contemporaneous with the urban life recorded in the Gangetic Plains. The students visited six galleries titled ‘Maduraiyum Keezhadiyum’, ‘Agriculture and Water Management’, ‘Kalam Seikho’, ‘Aadayum Anikalankalum’, ‘Maritime Trade,” and ‘Vaazhviyal.” They explored the history and richness of the artifacts exhibited. The museum is equipped with a touch-screen display for the visitors to get a glimpse of artifacts regarding the Vaigai Valley Civilization. The museum also displayed a replica of a cargo ship recalling the ‘Sangam Era’ of maritime trade.  Earthenware and pottery were also exhibited in various dimensions. Adding to this, ancient coins that were unearthed were also displayed. The students enjoyed and understood the great pride in the ancient Tamil Civilization.

Career counseling on “Hospitality Job Opportunities in the Overseas and Cruise Line Shipping Industry”

The HEN Association of the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized an alumni interaction for the second year (for 17 students) on March 9, 2023. Mr.R. Rajkumar, sous-chef, ABM Grande Hotels & Resorts, Theni (Batch 1995–1997), and Mr.S. Nagarajan, head chef, Bermuda Pie Restaurant, Bermuda Batch (1998–2001), alumnae of the department explained the opportunities available in aboard and shipping. They created awareness among the students about “Hospitality Job Opportunities in the Overseas and Cruise Line Shipping Industry “. They spoke of how a career in shipping and overseas is perfect for individuals who are fascinated by the sea and foreign lands, love traveling, and want to experience different cultures. They also said that the growth of the hospitality industry after COVID-19 would increase demand for skilled professionals. After completing your degree, you can join the government, private shipping companies, or various countries hospitality industries. The shipping and hotel industries are two of the best sectors to build your career in. Marine catering students can also join the merchant navy as general stewards, and in a land-based hotel, you can as a beginner. This program boosted the confidence of the students.

On 25.2.23, the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management went on a field visit to Keezhadi, Sivaganga District, with the second and first-year students (40 students). The students are aware of the Keezhadi excavation, which was carried out by a team of archaeologists from Tamil Nadu and Kerala and discovered a Neolithic burial site dating back to 4900 BC. The excavations were carried out in Keezhadi village near Madurai in Tamil Nadu between 2013 and 2015. The excavation also revealed human habitation during the Sangam period (Sangam-age settlement). There are evidence of burial under mounds or cairns containing pottery vessels and other objects made from stone slabs or clay, and they found several cemeteries with human remains and animal bones, besides other artifacts such as beads, pottery, and stone tools. Students will gain a better understanding of Tamil civilization and have a memorable experience as a result of this field trip.

: SLCS- Samaaj Seva – an outreach Program on – “Share the Meal” – Donate the Food to the School children, Surabhi Trust, Kariapatti.

 HEN Association, Marine Catering and Hotel Management and Yuva Club (Ministry of Tourism)  organized SLCS-Samaaj Seva: an outreach activity- “Share the Meal” – Donate Food to the School children, at Surabhi Trust, Kariyapatti on 25.02.2023. Faculty members of the MCHM department and 13 students prepared around 100 packs of food and served it to the school children. Trust managers conveyed their sincere thanks to the college management, faculty members and students who contributed food items for the school children.

Intra Institutional Innovation Competition “SLCS Sandhai – 2023 -Mega Sales Day”

On 24.02.2023, Marine Catering and Hotel Management and EDC cell jointly organized an Intra Institutional Innovation Competition “SLCS Sandhai – 2023 -Mega Sales Day” at our college premises. The resource person, Mr. P. Jeya Selvam, Asst. director, Br. MSME Development Institute and Facilitation Office, Madurai, spoke to the students on the fundamentals of marketing, provided some recommendations for entrepreneurship skill development, and advised the students to be familiar with the product, financial viability and Break Event Point analysis. He discussed his own experience and the benefits of starting own business. He continued by outlining how to become well-versed in supply chain management and adviced on how to foster future start-up entrepreneurship. On sales day, the students marketed and sold a variety of goods including stationery, consumer foods, mobile accessories and were able to make profit.
