The School of Animation and Media Studies organized a workshop titled “From Pen to Tablet: A Journey in Line Art Techniques” on December 3, 2024, for its students. The session was conducted by Mr. M. Rathina Basker, a renowned cartographer and artist celebrated for his extensive work in documenting the sculptures of Pudumandapam through line art. Over eight years, he meticulously illustrated the intricate sculptures, culminating in the publication of his book “Monoliths of Madurai Pudumandapam: Line Art Illustration.” His artistic journey and creative process formed the core of this inspiring workshop.
A total of 63 students participated in the event. During the session, Mr. M. Rathina Basker shared his artistic experiences, emphasizing the evolution of line art from traditional pen-and-paper techniques to modern digital tools. He discussed various aspects of line art, including composition, perspective, detailing, and storytelling through visual art. Demonstrating live drawing techniques, he explained how to maintain precision and artistic expression while transitioning between traditional and digital mediums. He also highlighted the importance of patience, practice, and perseverance in mastering intricate art forms like line drawing.
The workshop offered an invaluable learning experience by blending artistic storytelling with practical demonstrations. Students gained insight into creating detailed artwork using both conventional and digital tools, inspiring them to explore line art as a powerful visual medium. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students discussed artistic challenges, career prospects in illustration, and the cultural significance of documenting heritage through art.
