The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a seminar on “AI and the Evolving trends in Hospitality Sector” on 29.09.2025. The session was handled by Dr. Srinivasan P, Principal, Sree Sowdambika College of Hotel Management, Aruppukottai who shared valuable insights into the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in hospitality. A total of 110 students from first, Second, and Third MCHM actively participated.
SLCS–SAMAAJ SEVA- EXTENSION ACTIVITY- “Democratic Responsibility”
Awareness among Village Communities- 16.02.2026
The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized an SLCS–Samaaj Seva Extension Activity titled “Democratic Responsibility” at Nedumadurai on 16.02.2026. A total of 25 students and two faculty members actively participated in the programme. The objectivity of the activity was to create awareness among the rural community about their democratic responsibility in elections and to emphasize the importance of informed and ethical voting.
DEPARTMENT OF MARINE CATERING AND HOTEL MANAGEMENT Santhai – 2K26

On 14.02.2026, the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management in collaboration with the EDC Cell successfully organized a Sales Day titled “Santhai – 2K26” at the college premises. The objective of the programme was to inculcate entrepreneurial skills among students and provide them with practical exposure to marketing and business operations. The programme was inaugurated with an expert session by the resource person Mr. Elango Rajendran, Senior Cluster General Manager, Grand by GRT Hotel, Madurai. He addressed the students on the fundamentals of marketing and emphasized the importance of understanding the product, financial viability, and Break-Even Point analysis before starting any business venture. He shared his personal professional experiences and highlighted the benefits of entrepreneurship and self-employment. He also guided the students on becoming familiar with supply chain management and encouraged them to develop a start-up mindset for future business opportunities.
As part of the Sales Day activity, students actively participated by setting up stalls and marketing their products. A wide range of items was sold, including stationery items, consumer food products such as Thattu Vadai, Mushroom Biryani, Ice creams, Cheese sandwiches, Cakes, and a Game Centre. The students applied marketing strategies such as attractive display, competitive pricing, and customer interaction, which helped them generate profit through their sales. More than 1000 students from various departments participated as customers. 73 students from different departments set up stalls(19 stalls) and sold their products successfully. The event provided hands-on experience in pricing, promotion, customer handling, teamwork, and financial management. This Sales Day programme greatly helped the students understand the concept of entrepreneurship, business planning, and real-time market behavior. It enhanced their confidence, communication skills, and decision-making ability. The event successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, motivating students to explore self-employment and start-up opportunities in the future.
WEBINAR ON “LEADERSHIP AND GROWTH FOCUSED TOWARDS THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY”
The HEN Association of the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a webinar on “Leadership and Growth Focused towards the Hospitality Industry” on 30.01.2026 through an online platform. The session was handled by Mr. R.A. Bala Guru, CEO, TEG University, Singapore. Totally 44 first Year MCHM students actively participated. The resource person emphasized leadership skills, overseas career opportunities (especially in Singapore), global industry trends, and adaptability in a competitive environment. The webinar was highly informative and interactive, motivating students to develop leadership qualities and growth-oriented mindsets for their future careers in the hospitality sector.
WORKSHOP ON “BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BAKERY BUSINESS”
The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a workshop on “Building a Successful Bakery Business” for first and second-year students from 30.01.2026 to 31.01.2026. 85 students actively participated in this program.. The session was conducted by Mr.Sudhakar, Bakery Chef, SRM University, Chennai. The workshop focused on the preparation techniques of special bakery products and provided hands-on training in items such as breads, rolls, doughnuts, cakes, cookies, and pastries. The program was successfully completed, enhancing students’ practical knowledge and skills in bakery product preparation
CAREER COUNSELING SESSION ON BANKING AND INSURANCE OPPORTUNITIES
The Department of Commerce (Banking and Insurance), in collaboration with the Cuentas Association, organized an insightful Career Counseling Awareness Programme on banking and insurance opportunities for aspiring finance professionals. The programme aimed to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice. It featured Ms. T. M. G. Trisha (2022–2025 Batch) of City Union Bank as the guest speaker. The resource person presented a comprehensive overview of the financial services sector, emphasizing key areas such as the evolving dual role of modern bankers, where traditional banking functions are integrated with the proactive marketing of financial products. She provided detailed guidance on preparing for the Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBF), highlighting its importance for career progression and technical competence. Participants gained valuable insights into frequently asked interview questions and the core competencies expected by HR professionals in the banking and insurance industries. The session also explained the training phase in financial institutions, illustrating how theoretical knowledge is transformed into practical experience during the initial months of employment. Furthermore, the nature of work in insurance companies was discussed, with particular emphasis on risk assessment and portfolio diversification. The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing students to clarify their doubts. A total of 104 students from I, II and III years of the programme benefited from the speaker’s personal experiences and professional expertise. The session left the participants better informed, motivated, and prepared to pursue rewarding careers in the banking and insurance sector.
PEER TEACHING SESSION ON GROUP INSURANCE
On December 15, 2025, the Department of Commerce (Banking and Insurance) organized a peer teaching session on Group Insurance, led by Ms. Swathi A of III B.Com (Banking and Insurance). The session provided a comprehensive exploration of the topic, covering its fundamental characteristics, various types, and the necessity of such coverage in modern business. Through the use of case studies, Ms. Swathi illustrated the practical advantages and disadvantages of group insurance schemes. By utilizing a peer-to-peer teaching model, the department successfully simplified a complex subject, fostering an interactive learning environment in which students gained deep insights into the role of insurance in both professional and personal contexts.
CUENTAS ASSOCIATION
The Cuentas Association of the Department of Commerce B.Com. (Banking and Insurance) successfully hosted an engaging and informative activity on December 6, 2024. The event featured an interactive session titled “Connection,” meticulously organized by Ms. A. Swathi and Ms. G. K. Keerthiga of III B.Com. (Banking and Insurance). This activity cultivated creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills among the students.
In conclusion, the association activity provided a superlative platform for students to demonstrate their capabilities, enrich their understanding, and foster meaningful and collaborative engagement with their peers.
VALUE ADDED COURSE – ETHICS IN BANKING AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
The Department of Commerce (B&I) successfully conducted a six-day Value-Added Course on Ethics in Banking and Financial Institutions for I B.Com (B&I) students from October 23 to 29, 2025. The sessions were facilitated by Mrs. V. Padmavathy, Assistant Professor of Commerce, and Mr. N. Arunkumar, Assistant Professor of Commerce, B.Com (Banking and Insurance), Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Madurai. The resource persons provided intensive training on ethical practices and professional responsibilities within the banking and financial services sector.
Outcome of the Program
The key outcomes of the “Ethics in Banking and Financial Institutions” course are as follows:
- Students developed professional judgment, ethical competence, and an understanding of responsible financial practices.
- They learned to apply various ethical theories and decision-making models to analyze real-world banking scenarios.
- Students gained knowledge of core ethical principles such as integrity, objectivity, confidentiality, professional competence, and fairness—essential qualities for ethical conduct in the financial sector.
- The program enabled students to identify and critically evaluate complex ethical dilemmas commonly encountered in the workplace (e.g., conflicts of interest, mis-selling of financial products, data privacy issues, and money laundering).
- Students learned to use structured decision-making processes to resolve ethical challenges while considering the consequences of their decisions on various stakeholders, including customers, colleagues, regulators, and society.
- The course aimed to instill a strong sense of professional integrity, encouraging students to act honestly and responsibly and to avoid actions that could harm clients or discredit the profession.
- Students developed an appreciation for the broader societal and environmental impact of financial decisions, including the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into banking and investment practices.
INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO GAINUP TECHNOTEK LIMITED, DINDIGUL
The Department of Commerce (B.Com – Banking and Insurance) organized an industrial visit to Gainup Technotek Limited, Dindigul, on October 25, 2025. A total of 62 students from II Year B.Com (B&I), accompanied by Mr. P. Ajay Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of English, and Mrs. R. Nithya Kalyani, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce (B&I), participated in the visit. During the industrial visit, the students were briefed on the company’s historical background, organizational structure, and the functions of its various departments. They also had the opportunity to observe the textile manufacturing process first hand. In conclusion, the industrial visit proved to be highly beneficial, providing students with valuable practical exposure to real-world commerce and industrial operations.
