Field trip – Keelakuyilkudi, Samanar Malai , Madurai

 On 17.2.22, the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management went  on a field trip to Keelakuyilkudi,Samanar Malai, with the Second year students (28 students). There the students had the hands on experience of learning historical facts with fun and enjoyed in this field trip.    Samanar hills, Keelakuyilkudi village which is around 12 km away from Madurai, is a beautiful blend of nature with historical importance. Declared as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India, this hill is an interesting site to visit presenting a glimpse of historical importance of southern India. These hills are associated with the  Jainism having Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions depicting various facets of this religion. Also known as Samanar Malai as the Tamil word Malai means hills, it boasts of ancient caves with carvings dating back to 1st century A.D. Samanar hill has many prominent sculpture and ancient inscriptions giving an insight into the history and into the Jainism religion which flourished here during the ancient times. The inscriptions on the hills are said to be more than 200 years old. These caves were the homes of many Jain monks during  the ancient era.

Miniature Sculpting Workshop

The Department of Animation conducted an Workshop on “Paper anatomy models making” on 10.02.2022 and 17.02.2022 (Thursday and Thursday) In Drawing Hall. Mr. S. Praveen Kumar, Instructor, Dept. of Animation handled the “Miniature Sculpting” Workshop for the students. He thought a new and creative way to make 3D models with simple papers and tape, which leads them to make different fascinating characters .They, also learned how to make their own character with physic and balance. This led them to understand the balance of an object in real life and how to keep the same balance in models while making it in 3D software’s. The Students enjoyed the activity and ended productively.

Totally 23 students on 10.02.2022 and 13 students on 17.02.2022 were participated in this programme.

Swachh Bharat – Cleaning drive at Teppakulam, Madurai

ZEAL, an Association of BBA Department, Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Madurai organized an extension activity “Cleaning drive at Teppakulam, Madurai” on 16.02.2022. 3 students from II BBA participated actively in the extension activity. This activity was organized as a part of the Swachh Bharat initiative promoted by the central government. This program was organized under the Samaaj Seva activity of our college. Students collected plastic waste in the surrounding areas.The students also exhibited some of their learning in the Environmental Studies Course which was taught to them in their I Semester.

SLCS- Smaaj Seva – an Extension Activity on- “Share the Meal” – Donated Food and Grocery to the Old age Home

The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized, (SLCS-Samaaj Seva), an extension activity on “Share the Meal” (Donating Food and Groceries to the Old age Home) in Anaiyur, Madurai on 16.2.22 .Considering the pandemic situation the 6 Marine catering and Hotel Management department faculty members and 10 students visited the Old age home and served various meals to the senior citizens who are living there. Besides, we have distributed to the inmates the monthly groceries worth of Rs.5000 like Toor Dhal, lentils,  Urad dhal, Rice bag, Sugar, Tea packets, Dry lentil, Cooking oil, Gingely oil, Garlic, Atta, Millets etc,,

               An appreciable level of humanity and humbleness were seen among the students who involved in this noble cause. We felt that as human beings, it’s our responsibility to help the most vulnerable amongst us in their time of need. Orphan managers conveyed their sincere thanks to all the faculty members who contributed money towards purchasing monthly groceries and food items for the old age home.

Extension Activity SLCS- Samaaj Seva on “Diet Counselling for Elderly people”

On 16.02.2022, FAGAS, an Association of the Department of Food Science and Processing Management of Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Madurai, organised an extension activity (SLCS Samaaj Seva) for the old age people in Anaiyur, Madurai, by giving Diet Counselling to the elderly people. Thirteen FSPM second-year students taught the value of healthy eating practises. To raise awareness, our students distributed brochures and provided counselling on the importance of various dietary practises to be followed by the old age people. Finally, our students demonstrated their readiness to give one month’s worth of groceries to the old age members.

Service to Kuruvithurai Perumal Temple” – Cholavanthan, Madurai

The Department of Commerce (Honours) ACCA organized an Outreach program Activity at Kuruvithurai Perumal Temple” – Cholavanthan, Madurai under “SLCS SAMAAJ SEVA” on 16.02.2022. We were extended warm greetings for the contribution of our all ACCA Students to the “Sri Chitraradha Vallaba Perumal Temple”, Kuruvithurai. The coordinator Mr. Nagarajan of kuruvithurai temple took the initiative and assigned them with task. Our ACCA students cleaned and did the chores of the work within the temple and created awareness regarding covid-19 to the visitors of the temple. All the students were doing their assigned work fervently. Guru Bhagwan-Jupiter constructed a place for his son on Vaigai River and performed penance on Lord Narayana. Hence, the place is called Guruvithurai-Kuruvithurai. Lord Narayana, pleased with his penance appeared before Guru on a Rath of aesthetic beauty and rescued his son Kasa. Hence, the lord is known as Chithiraradha Perumal – Perumal with a Rath of aesthetic beauty. The students were happy to spend that day at the temple. Though the time spent in the temple was just a few hours, however, they experienced peace of mind and spiritual awakening. The temple authorities expressed gratitude to college management for taking the initiative and helping the students in keeping the temple clean. 50 students of I, II and III year ACCA visited and rendered service in the temple precincts’.

Workshop on “Art of chocolate”

The Department of Food Science and  Processing Management and the Department of Marine Catering & Hotel Management jointly organized a Workshop on “Art of chocolate” from 14.02.2022 to 15.02.2022 at F36 class room. 32(II year) students from MC&HM, 12 (II year) students from FS &PM (totally 44 students) eagerly participated in this program. This workshop was presented to the students, which included theoretical and hands- on training program with manufacturing aspects of chocolate. Ms. Sanashree was the trainer for this workshop.She began the activity with an elaborate explanation of the art of chocolate and different varieties of chocolate Gateau preparations.  At the end of the day the students gathered an appreciable level of practical knowledge about the different varieties of chocolate with utmost satisfaction.

CELEBRATION OF WORLD RADIO DAY

The Department of Animation & Visual communication jointly celebrated the “World Radio Day 2022” on 14.02.2022 (Monday) between 11.00 AM and 01.30 PM. Mr. P. Kishore Kumar, Head i/c cum Asst. Prof., Department of Animation welcomed the gathering. Mr.BabuShajan Kevin, Head i/c cum Asst. Prof., Department of Viscom introduced the chief guest, Mr. John Raja Durai, Associate programming director, Music Broadcast Private Limited (Radiocity 91.1FM). He addressed the students that the World Radio Day is observed to recognize the contribution of the mass communication medium in providing news and entertainment across all strata of society. He advised the students to discuss the current affairs, general knowledge and narrate stories through Podcast. He inspired and motivated the students by sharing the tactics and nuances required to become a Radio Jockey. He stressed on delivering the content in one’s own style with creativity which is one of the most important factors needed for attracting audience though it might be in a grumpy, squeaky, soft or loud voice. He reinforced the idea that the nature of the voice is never an issue. He mentioned that at times, a person well prepared to deliver the content might be rejected and the one who talks with originality and confidence is selected.The students eagerly participated in the activity. Besides they got clarified their doubts with the resource person regarding taking up RJ as a profession. The event helped the students in understanding the medium of radio better. Totally 66 Students from both the departments participated in this event.

“Service to Gandhi Memorial Museum”, Madurai

The Department of Commerce (Honours) ACCA organized an Outreach program Activity at “Gandhi Memorial Museum”, Madurai under “SLCS SAMAAJ SEVA” on 14.02.2022. We were extended warm greetings by the members of National Museum. The coordinator of the Gandhi museum Mr. Nanda Rao took the charge and the assigned some tasks. The students were divided into a team. Some of them were asked to write the certificates, the others were told to arrange the books, newspapers and clean the library area and the rest were told to count the sculptures. Everyone was doing their work enthusiastically and had completed the task by 12.50pm. The coordinator briefed the history of Gandhi museum. The exhibits & artifacts are on Gandhi & India’s independent movement, with many photos depicting his life. At the end of the session they took some photos.

The incharge of the museum was overwhelmed by our presence and our service. They were happy to spend that day in the museum. Though the time spent with them was just a few hours, however, it taught us the lesson for a lifetime. At, last Mr. A.Raja, Assistant Professor thanked the Museum Coordinator and in charges for having given the wonderful opportunity to visit the museum. 50 students of I, II and III year ACCA visited and served them.
