The Department of Commerce (Banking and Insurance) organized a seminar on the Awareness and Opportunities of the Securities Market in India on January 6, 2024 for II and III B.Com students at Seminar hall. Mr. B. Badrinarayanan, Senior Executive, BSE IPF, Chennai, and Mr.B.Karthick, Head, Tamil Nadu Region CDSL, have been invited as the Resource Person for the seminar. They explianed in detail about awareness of the stock market, types of investor in the stock market and the Indian stock market instruments.

Outcome of the Programme

• Understand the basics of securities markets.
• Examine the current state of stock exchange awareness in India.
• Know the factors that discourage investing in the stock market.

The Department of Commerce participated in state – level intercollegiate meet organised by Lady Doak College on February 16, 2024. Totally, 15 students from I Year of B.COM (Banking & Insurance) participated in the Inter Collegiate Meet. Mrs.E.Hema, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce (B&I), accompanied the students. The students received participation certificates for all the events.

            I and II-year B.Com, (B&I) students organized a farewell meet for the III-year B.Com, (B&I) students on March 29, 2024, at the NS annexure building. The program commenced with a prayer song, followed by the welcome address that is delivered by Mr. HITENDHAR SINGH.U of II B.Com, (B&I). The presidential address was delivered by Mrs.V.Padmavathy, Head of the Department, Mr. N. Arunkumar, Dr.A.Devi, and Mrs.E.Hema conducted this session. Mrs.V.Padmavathy, Head of the Department, conveyed the best wishes to all the outgoing students. Many games were conducted by I and II year B.Com (B&I) students to entertain the III year students. The program ended with a National Anthem.

            Our Alumni (2018-2021 batch) Mr. Deepan, Management Trainee from Purchase Department, Kazhana Jewellers, interacted with our 78 students  of III B.Com. (B&I) on February 26, 2024. He spoke on the importance of the license and associate exam and other career opportunities in banking and insurance companies. All the students actively participated and gained more knowledge about career opportunities in banking and insurance companies.

Outcome of the Programme

During the meeting, the alumni shared their experiences with the students, which they had faced after stepping out of the institution.

• It creates a special bond with the students, who have already established themselves in the outside world.
• The event was utilized to apply experience to a real-life situation.
• The alumni helped the students by giving guidance for academic and co-curricular activities.

The students of I B.Com, (Banking & Insurance) at Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Madurai, organized a one-day camp and an awareness program at “Plastic-Free Village” in Solankuruni on March 1, 2024, under the Valayankulam Taluk.  The village president, Mr. Chandrapandi .M gave a warm and hearty honour for our camp students. Totally 47 students of I B. Com, (B & I) were involved in this program, and nearly 180 people benefit from the program.

 Outcome of the program:

The outcome of the one-day camp was manifold and highly impactful. It significantly increased awareness about the dire problem of plastic pollution and promoted reducing plastic usage in the community. The campaign also advocated for increased recycling and composting, fostering improved waste management practices. Moreover, the camp empowered the community to take proactive measures to protect the environment for the well-being of future generations. The active participation of the students and the village leadership highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges. It serves as a noteworthy step towards creating a more eco-conscious and sustainable community.

The Department of B.Com (Banking and Insurance) organized a seminar on “stock market wealth and entrepreneurship” on September 14, 2023. The event took place at the Seminar Hall from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The resource person for the seminar was Mr. Ramswamy A., a representative from Aetram Traders Pvt. Ltd., Madurai.

During the seminar, Mr. Ramswamy shared his brief knowledge and experience in stock market trading and entrepreneurship. He provided valuable insights into how the stock market can be a powerful tool for wealth creation. He also discussed the various opportunities and challenges associated with entrepreneurship, particularly in the financial sector.

He also addressed the students’ queries regarding investment strategies, market trends, and the importance of financial literacy in entrepreneurship. Totally 122 students got benefitted from this event.

The Department of B.Com (Banking and Insurance) participated in a faculty development program (fdp) organized by the Insurance Institute of India on August 9, 2023. The program was conducted in online from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and the resource person for the session was Ms. Tejaswita S. Dalvi, an expert in the field of insurance education

Faculty members from the department took part in this program, that includes Mrs. V. Padmavathy, Mrs. R. Nithya Kalyani, Mr. N. Arunkumar , Dr. Devi, and Mrs. Hema,. The session focused on enhancing the participants’ knowledge and teaching methodologies related to insurance and risk management

Ms. Dalvi covered a wide range of topics, including recent trends in the insurance industry, innovative teaching strategies, and the integration of practical industry insights into academic curriculam. The session also included discussions on emerging challenges and opportunities in insurance education, providing the faculty members with fresh perspectives and practical tools to apply in their teaching.

                                              The Department of Commerce (B.Com Banking & Insurance) organized an engaging alumni interaction session on September 19, 2023. The event took place in Hall No: 112 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. The resource person for the session was Ms. K. Anjana, an alumna from the 2017–2020 batch. She is  currently working as an HRA at Conduent Solutions. During the session, Ms. Anjana shared her professional journey and work experience with  80 students from III B.Com (B&I) and 45 students from II B.Com (B&I). She provided insights into the corporate world, specifically focusing on human resource management and the challenges and opportunities in her role at Conduent Solutions. . She also answered questions from the students, offering practical advice on how to prepare for a successful career after graduation. Totally 125 students got benefitted from this event.

The career counseling program aims at providing assistance to the students in choosing a major career path. Mr. Raja, ICS addressed the session and made an elaborate explanation on the career exploration process to the students and instructed how their own skills and interest align with a chosen career path.

Cuentas Association, Department of Commerce organized Valedictory program for the academic year 2022-23 on 12^th May, 2023. The Program started with the Welcome address rendered by the Secretary of the Association, Mr. OviyaPrasath.Y, I,B.Com(B&I). The Presidential note was delivered by Mrs. V. Padmavathy, Head of the Department of Commerce. Students of B.Com B&I presented a topic on‘Recent trends in Banking’. Torch bearers of the association for the academic year 2022-23 surrendered their badges and the program ended with National Anthem.
