Seminar on Investor Awareness Program

The National Stock Exchange and the Department of B.Com- Banking and Insurance organized a Seminar on Investor Awareness Program on January 31, 2025, for II B.Com students in Seminar. The session began with a warm welcome by Ms.Sai Sruthi, II B.Com Students, who introduced the guest speaker and handed over the session. Mr.R.Rajesh Babu, NCFE Empanelled Trainer, National Centre for Financial Education, Madurai, has been invited as the resource person. He provided a detailed description of the importance of financial literacy, investment strategies, and the fundamentals of responsible investing. This program aimed to equip students with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their personal finances and investments, laying the groundwork for future financial independence.. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Suriya Prabha, II Year Students. Totally 46 students of II B.Com B&I got benefitted.

Outcome of the Programme

  • Students were introduced how financial markets operate, including the importance of stock exchanges and regulatory bodies such as SEBI. They learned about the factors that influence market trends and the role of investors in the broader economy.
  • Students recognized the importance of starting to plan their finances early in life. Some even mentioned that they would start saving and budgeting more effectively as a result of the program’s focus on the importance of financial discipline.
  • The program contributed to improve financial literacy among young students, many of whom had little to no prior knowledge about financial markets or personal finance management.
  • Students were better equipped to make informed investment decisions and build comprehensive financial plans for their future.

 

Seminar on Financial Literacy Program

       The National Centre for Financial Education and the Department of B.Com-Banking and Insurance organized a seminar on the Financial Literacy Program on January 31, 2025, for I B.Com students in Seminar Hall. The session began with a warm welcome delivered by Ms.Sai Sruthi, II B.Com Students, who introduced the guest speaker and handed over the session., Mr.R.Rajesh Babu, NCFE Empanelled Trainer, National Centre for Financial Education, Madurai has been invited as the resource person. He provided a detailed description of the program to provide a comprehensive understanding of investment basics: identity theft, responsible use of credit cards, education loan borrowing principles, how to avoid impulsive buying, let’s go cashless, and your first pay cheque. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Suriya Prabha, II Year Students. Totally, 66 students of I B.Com B&I got benefitted.

Outcome of the Programme

  • Students were able to learn foundational concepts like budgeting, saving, credit management, and understanding financial products such as loans, insurance, and credit cards. This program helped them to understand the financial world and make informed decisions as they entered adulthood.
  • The seminar instilled a sense of financial responsibility in students, teaching them how to prioritize spending, save money, and live within their means. This awareness helped them to make more mindful decisions with their money. Students were better equipped to make informed investment decisions and build comprehensive financial plans for their future.
  • Students were able to prepare face decisions like choosing a college or career path based on their financial situation, understanding student loans, or managing living expenses while in school or starting their first job.

SEMINAR ON INVESTMENT PLANNING FOR THE BETTERMENT OF WEALTH MANAGEMENT

The Department of B.Com- Banking and Insurance organized a Seminar on Investment Planning for the betterment of Wealth Management on January 8, 2025, for II B.Com students in room no. 112. The session began with a warm welcome delivered by Ms.Sai Sruthi, II B.Com Students, who introduced the guest speaker and handed over the session. Dr.Karthick Babu, Associate Professor of MBA, RLIMS at Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Madurai, invited as the resource person. He provided a detailed description of how investment management works and how to plan investments at a young age. Furthermore he added an in-depth understanding of how strategic investment planning which can lead to the enhancement of personal and corporate wealth. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Suriya Prabha, II Year Students. Totally, 46 students from II B.Com B&I got benefitted.

Outcome of the Program

  • Students gained a deeper understanding of how strategic investment planning can drive long-term wealth creation. Through expert-led discussions, they learned about the critical elements involved in crafting a personalized investment strategy, such as risk tolerance, asset allocation, and long-term goals.

WORKSHOP ON GST FILING

The Department of B.Com- Banking and Insurance organized a Workshop on GST Filing on December 31, 2024, for III B.Com students in room no. S62. The session began with a warm welcome addressed by Mrs.V.Padmavathy, Head of the Department, who introduced the guest speaker and handed over the session. Dr.B.Shanmugapriya, Assistant Professor of Commerce at Manikam Ramaswami College of Arts and Science, Madurai, invited as the resource person. She provided a step-by-step guide to GST returns filing and common challenges faced. The speaker engaged the students with insightful explanations on topics that clarify the various forms and returns required under GST and explain the different category of taxpayers and their responsibilities. The seminar also focused on common mistakes made during the filing process, such as incorrect HSN/SAC codes, wrong calculation of tax liabilities, and failure to match input tax credits (ITC). Totally 80 III B.Com students got benefited.

GUEST LECTURE- INSURANCE PLANNING

The Department of Commerce-Banking and Insurance organized a Guest Lecture on insurance planning for B.Com II Year students. Mr. Ajay, an alumnus (2021-24 batch), delivered the lecture. He educated participants on the importance of insurance in personal financial planning. The session aimed at enhancing the understanding of insurance products, their role in risk management, and the crucial part they play in securing both personal and family finances. Totally, 46 students from II B.Com B&I got benefitted.

Outcome of the Program

  • Students can learn about life insurance policies (term, whole life, and endowment) and health insurance policies, including critical illness, hospitalization, and family floater plans.
  • Students will learn that insurance is a critical component of a holistic financial plan.
  • The lecture could help demystify insurance jargon and clarify terms like premium, sum assured, deductibles, policy exclusions, and riders. This empowers the audience to make informed decisions when selecting policies.
  • The session could cover how insurance can play a key role in planning for retirement and leaving behind a legacy for loved ones. Policies like pension plans or life insurance with investment benefits can help individuals prepare financially for the future.

ALUMNI INTERACTION – OPPORTUNITIES IN BANK

Mr. Ajay, Relationship Executive at Team Lease Putting to Work (TM) and an alumnus (2021-24 batch) with a degree in B.Com Banking and Insurance, addressed III B.Com (B&I) students. The session was conducted to discuss career opportunities and emerging roles in the banking sector, with a focus on the Indian Post Payments Bank (IPPB). The session aimed to provide insights into the evolution of the banking industry in India, particularly the transformative role of IPPB, and how alumni can leverage these opportunities for career advancement. Totally, 80 III B.Com (B&I) students got benefitted.

Outcome of the Program

  • IPPB has created job opportunities in the banking and financial services sector, which can be particularly beneficial for students pursuing banking, finance, or economics Students can join as business correspondents, relationship managers, or even get hired in technical, customer support, and operational roles.
  • IPPB offers internship programs and training opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in the banking sector. These internships provide exposure to banking operations, financial products, and digital payments, which are valuable for students pursuing careers in finance, business, or technology.
  • Students with an entrepreneurial mindset can leverage the business correspondent (BC) model to become local agents for IPPB. Through this, they can earn commissions for providing services like account opening, fund transfers, bill payments, and more to customers in their communities.

Alumni Interaction session along with the inauguration of the Cuentas Association

The Department of Commerce (B.Com Banking & Insurance) organized an Alumni Interaction session along with the inauguration of the Cuentas Association at the Annexure Hall. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Abraham Pradeep from RLIM, who served as the resource person.

During the Alumni Interaction, Dr. Pradeep shared his extensive knowledge and experiences, focusing on the importance of aligning academic pursuits with industry demands.

The event stretched first, second, and third-year students, benefiting total of 191 participants. During the inauguration, new office bearers were elected, Ms. Lakshmi Priya from the third year B&I was appointed as President, Mr. Kesavan from the third year as Vice President, and Ms. Lavanya from the first year as Secretary.

Alumni Interaction

The Department of Commerce (Banking & Insurance) organized an Alumni Interaction session on July 2, 2024. The event took place in Hall No: 112 from 10.00 AM to 11:00 AM. The resource person for the session was Mr. K. Hariharan, an alumna of  the  batch of 2020–2023. The event was tailored for first and second-year B&I students and focused on providing insights into details in DBF, the courses offered, and potential career opportunities in the field. Totally 112 students got benefited from this programme

Orientation Programme

The Department of B.Com (Banking & Insurance) conducted an Orientation Programme on June 1, 2024, in Hall No: 104. The session was led by the Head of the Department, Mrs. Padmavathy. The event was attended by 45 students from the II Year and 80 students from the III Year B.Com (B&I). During the session, Mrs. Padmavathy provided a comprehensive overview of the courses offered, emphasizing the importance of discipline and the opportunities available through the Diploma in Banking and Finance. She also discussed the college and department’s Mission and Vision, course outcomes, program outcomes, and the importance of grooming and personal development in professional education. Totally 125 students got benefited from this programme.

VAC- Economics in Banking

The Department of B.Com (Banking & Insurance) conducted a value added course in Economics in Banking from July 3 to July 13, 2024, which held in Hall No. 112. The course, led by   Mr. K. Hariharan, an alumnus from the batch of 2020-23, was specifically designed for third-year students preparing for their Diploma in Banking and Finance exam. This course aimed to provide targeted insights and practical knowledge, proving to be highly beneficial for the student’s exam preparation and their future careers in the banking and finance sector. Totally 80 students got benefited from this programme.
