Open Cake Challenge

The second year students of Marine Catering and Hotel Management participated in the Open Cake Challenge, under the student category competition, conducted by Food Consulate, Chennai on 25.1.2019 & 26.1.2020. Twenty Two students actively participated in these competitions. They won the overall Best Performance award in the cake competition.  This motivated and encouraged the students, besides, making it a memorable experience.

ALUMNUS INTERACTION

On 24th January 2020, Mr.J.S.Dinesh Kumar, an alumnus of the department, interacted with the first year students and shared his experience in the field of IT and Networking. He advised the students to find places to intern during Summer Training with an objective to learn and experience real life problem solving skills.The alumnus was appreciated for his efforts in finding time to share his experience with the students.           

Industrial Visit

he Department of Commerce (Honours) organized a one day visit to ‘Parle G’ Biscuit Company, Madurai. A total of 34 students from I year B.Com (Honours) and I year B.Com (Honours) ACCA accompanied by 2 faculty members visited the company. Mr.Kather Ushan, coordinated with the students and explained the process of manufacture. This visit helped the students to understand the manufacture of biscuits. The visit ended with the faculty and the students thanking the management of Parle G Biscuit for providing a valuable opportunity.

Industrial Visit

The Department of Commerce (Honours) organized a one day visit to the ‘Dinamalar Production Unit’ at Madurai. A total of 34 students from I year B.Com (Honours) and I year B.Com (Honours) ACCA accompanied by 2 faculty members visited the unit. This visit helped the students to understand the process involved in fully automated printing of newspapers and magazines. Students interacted with officials working at Dinamalar and were told about the mode of organizing news in columns, usages of colors and inks, loading & distributing of papers, etc. The visit ended with the faculty and the students thanking the management of ‘Dinamalar’ for providing a valuable opportunity.

Birthday Celebration of Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose

The Department of Networking celebrated the birthday of Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose on 23.01.2020. The program started with a prayer song, Mr.M.Athigopal, Head, Department of Networking welcomed the gathering. Dr.B.Ramamoothy, the Principal, gave a wonderful speech about our national leader Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He also spoke of his early life and political achievements. A few students of B.Sc (Networking) gave speeches about Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The program ended with the  National Anthem.

Off-Campus Placement drive

Kotak Life Insurance conducted a Placement drive at Thiyagaraja Arts and Science College, Madurai. 16 students from III B.Com (B&I) of our College participated in the drive. The selection process started with an on-line aptitude test, followed by a Group discussion and Personal interview. One student Mr.K.S.Karthich (17447) was selected and received his offer letter.

Career Counseling Program

The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a Career Counseling Program on 21.01.2020, for the second year students. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. C. Sureshkumar, the HoD. Mr. Antony Dhavaraja Manager – HR, K Four Apartment & Hotels Private Limited, Madurai, presented their hotel profile and briefed the students about the selection process of their company for part time and full time jobs, He also explained the job responsibility of each and every individual position and person. This programme boosted the confidence of the students.

Guest Lecture

The Department of Food Science and Processing Management organized a guest lecture on “Current Processing Techniques in Meat and Fish” for the students of B.Sc I and II Year at SLCS, Madurai on 21 January 2020. Mrs.Poorinima Jeyasekaren, a specialist in Food and Nutrition for the past 9 years, currently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, the American College, Madurai, was invited as the resource person

Dr.B.Ramamoorthy, Pricipal , SLCS, felicitated the gathering  Dr.R.Durgadevi, Assistant Professor and Head in charge, Department of Food Science and Processing Management, SLCS   introduced the speaker and the topic of lecture to the students.

In her lecture Mrs.Poorinima Jeyasekaren discussed the technical advances in meat and fish processing the value and demand of these food products in the market and value added products, she also stressed that technological development will lead the way for fish and meat to become major nutritional sources in the human diet.

The programme ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. M. Kavitha – Assistant Professor.

Alumnus Interaction

On 20.1.2020, the students of MC&HM had a chance to interact with one of the department’s distinguished Alumnus Mr. Sathakul Hug Mohamed (2007-2010 batches) who has become a successful Human Resource Manager with the Tourism Department of Dubai. He advised his juniors to acquire practical knowledge, while doing their experiments and making projects. He further added that hands -on training is the best way of understanding concepts which in turn brings about self confidence.

Extension activity at M.S.Chellamuthu Trust

ZEAL, BBA Association of Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Madurai, organized an extension activity at the Bodhi campus of M.S.Chellamuthu Trust on 18.01.2020. Students had the opportunity of meeting some of the inmates affected by mental disability. The inmates were very happy to see the students moving close with them and understanding their feelings and emotions. This led to a strong emotional bonding between the inmates and the students. The staff of the Trust felt that this is a small step towards the holistic development of their normalization process.
