Alumnus Interaction on “Career opportunities in Saudi Arabia”

The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized a career guidance program on “Career Opportunities in Saudi Arabia” for the second year (37 students) to create awareness about hotel industry opportunities in Middle Eastern countries on Dec 1, 2023. Mr. R. S. Hariharan (Batch 2018-2021), the department alumnus who is currently employed as a catering supervisor at Allied Contracting Catering in Saudi Arabia, briefed about the selection process of internships and full-time job opportunities in Middle Eastern countries. He also explained the job responsibilities of every individual in the catering field. At the end of the session, students interacted with the alumnus and clarified their doubts. To put it in a nutshell, this program boosted the confidence of the students.

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN

The Hospitality Education Network (HEN) Association of the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management and Entrepreneur Development Cell jointly organized an “Earn While You Learn” program, exclusively for the first-year students, and provided them an opportunity to prepare various assorted sweets on their own with the support of the Head and other faculty members of the department. Totally, 32 students from the first-year of the department actively participated. Each of the student participants has prepared two sweets and one savory with the support of a faculty member, and around 200 boxes consisting of 500 gm of sweets were prepared. After the preparation, the sweets boxes were sold to various department faculty members and students. Through this program, the students have experienced bulk cooking, gained hands-on experience, and gained knowledge in bulk production, indenting, costing, and promoting marketing and sales. They kept the sweet boxes for sales on 09.11.2023 and 10.11.2023.

Internship Guidance Meeting

The objective of the final internship is to develop the necessary skills of the students to function as entry-level managers in the hospitality industry. In continuation of the same, the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized an internship program for the third-year students. The training program was conducted from November 8, 2023 to March 8, 2023. The department organized an Internship Guidance Meeting on 28.10.23 to inform the students about the internship program.  Mr.C.Suresh Kumar, Head of the Department, guided the students and their parents regarding the below-mentioned points.

  • Log book for students, hotel information, and accommodation for students
  • Reporting date and dress code the training program
  • Declaration form for internship training and importance of  the training certificate
  • Responsibility of the students in their work place
  • Documents to be presented ( Bonafide certificate , ID Card , Police verification certificate, Aadhar card photocopy, Medical fitness certificate)

Through this program, the students and parents were able to understand their roles and responsibilities during the internship program. Dr.R.Sujatha, Principal, Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science delivered the presidential address and Dr.S.Priya, Dean-Academics felicitated the gathering.  Totally 37 students actively participated in this meeting.

Intra-departmental Cooking Competition on “International Chef Day”

The Hospitality Education Network (HEN) Association of the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management conducted an intra-departmental cooking competition as a part of the celebration for “International Chef Day” on 20.10.2023. Students from the first year of the department (32 students) actively participated in the cooking competition.  Mr. R. Sanjay R and Mr. M. Saravana Kumar, took first place, and Mr. S. Premkumar and Mr. S. Ragul Venkat took second place, and Mr. S. Karthikeyan and Mr. P. Lakshmi Ramana took third place in the competition. It has recognized the students’ ability to work as members of a team to demonstrate valuable skills in recipe development, food preparation, presentation, organization, and local food systems, and also made it a memorable experience.

Brief about Expert/Speaker:

        Dr. V. Karpagam is currently serving as the Professor and Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Data Science at Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore. With 25 years of academic experience, she completed her Ph.D. in the field of Information and Communication Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, in 2014. She earned her Master’s degree in Software Engineering from Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore, in 2008 and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science & Engineering from Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore, in 1996. Dr. Karpagam is a recognized Anna University Supervisor and is currently guiding five scholars in the domains of Artificial Intelligence, Medical Image Processing, and Cyber Security. Her research and teaching interests encompass Computer Vision, Deep Learning, Database Technologies, Cyber Security, and Health Analytics.

Objectives of the activity: 
  • To acquire a foundational understanding of the techniques and tools essential for training a deep learning model.
  • To gain practical experience with common deep learning data types and model architectures.
  • To improve model accuracy by enhancing datasets through data augmentation.
  •  To efficiently achieve results with less data and computation by leveraging transfer learning between models.
  • To instill confidence in participants to undertake their own projects using modern deep learning frameworks.
Outcome of the activity: Students were able to

  Develop familiarity with deep learning, a field where computer models learn to perform classification tasks directly from various data types, including images, text, or sound.

  Gain awareness of the current trends, support, and resistance within the deep learning domain.

  Understand that deep learning models can achieve state-of-the-art accuracy, sometimes surpassing human-level performance, through technical and fundamental analysis, especially in the stock market.

The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management conducted Board of Studies meeting via online on 13.10.2023 at 2.30 p.m. Dr.S.Praveen Kumar, Assistant Professor, Centre for Tourism and Hotel Management, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, chaired the session as the University Nominee, Mrs. G. Usha, Assistant Professor, Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management, PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, has been invited as the Academic Expert, Mr. Arunkumar M, HR Manager, Courtyard by Marriott, Madurai, served as the Industrial Expert and Mr.P.Muthukumar, Demi Chef De parte, Costa Cruise Line, attended the meeting as an alumnus. Mr. C. Sureshkumar, Head of the Department, chaired the session along with his faculty members. A student and his parent were invited to share their feedback and recommendations for finalizing the syllabi for the academic year 2023-24 (even semester).

INDUSTRIAL VISIT

The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized an industrial visit for the first-year students on 4.10.2023, at the Hotel Courtyard by Marriott Madurai. The students were able to see and observe the functions of different departments. They have learned the theoretical part of hospitality in classrooms. The practical experience of a hotel has made them understood basic practical concepts. At the end of the visit, students have got the opportunity to interact with the managers. To put in a nutshell, it was an overwhelming experience for the students. Totally, 31 students and 2 faculty members participated in this visit.

SICA Culinary Challenge & Exhibition 2023

The students from the Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management participated in the “SICA Culinary Challenge & Exhibition 2023” hosted by the South Indian Culinary Association (SICA) in the Trade Center, Chennai, on 15.09.23 to 17.09.23. A total of seven students from III MCHM participated in this competition. Mr.Divyadarshan A. and Mr. R. Akash participated in the Live Innovative Briyani Cooking Competition and received the merit certificate. Mr. Samuel M. and Mr. K. B. Karthick Babu participated in a cocktail and mocktail competition and got the participant certificate. Mr. A. Kasinathan actively participated in the fruit and vegetable carving competition, and he got the participant certificate. Mr. Prejith Kumar S. and Mr. Ragul participated in the Live Creative Skilled Paratha competition, and they won the bronze. This competition motivated and encouraged the students, providing a memorable experience.

CELEBRATION OF UNIVERSAL CHILDRENS DAY

      D. P. Roy Choudhury Association, Department of Animation celebrated theCELEBRATION OF UNIVERSAL CHILDRENS DAY on 20.11.2022 by instructing the students to design the posters in the theme of Universal Children’s Day 2022.

Ms. Jeyabharathi from III year B.Sc. Animation has designed a wonderful poster and it was uploaded it in the department official Social Media Pages.The main objective of this event is to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on 20th November, every year. This date was chosen as a day to celebrate childhood. Prior to 1959 Children’s Day was universally celebrated in the month of October. This was first celebrated in the year 1954, as decided by the UN General Assembly. Basically this day was instituted with the only aim of promoting communal exchange and understanding among children, as well as to bring about beneficiary action to promote the welfare of children, all over the world. The date 20th November was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the day in 1959, when the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.

Children’s Day is all about celebrating the wonderful, pure and innocent childhood. On this day, the department is happy to conduct the Celebration of Universal Children’s Day. It is basically all about giving the child the right kind of knowledge and freedom to enjoy, so that they can grow as healthy and educated citizens of the country.

PARENTS TEACHERS MEET

Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management organized Parents Teachers Meet for I and II year on 09.09.2023 at 2.00 P.M.  The main objective of the meeting is to create a common platform, where teachers and parents come together to discuss student’s performance and devise ways to enrich their learning experience. The class in-charge explained the student’s attendance, CIA- I marks and discussed on the semester course implementation and progress. The progress report of I and II year students was intimated to the parents. The PTA meeting came to an end with the conclusion that the progress and development of the students depends on the joint effort of parents and teachers. Totally, 45 students came with their parents and attended the PTA meet.
