The Art & Media Club of the School of Animation and Media Studies organized a Live Portrait Sketching Activity on “Creating a Pencil Portrait from Basic Shapes” on 12th September 2026, from 12:40 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Chroma Lab. The session was conducted by Mr. R. Arul Yogaraj, Assistant Professor, School of Animation and Media Studies, who served as the resource person. The activity was organized with the objective of introducing students to the process of developing a portrait using simple geometric forms and fundamental pencil-sketching techniques. Around 60 students actively participated in the session. During the activity, the resource person demonstrated how a portrait can be constructed by beginning with basic shapes and gradually developing the structure of the face. Students were guided through important aspects such as facial proportions, placement of features, outlining, line quality, light and shadow, shading, texture, and creating depth. The live demonstration helped students understand how simple shapes can be transformed into a recognizable and proportionate pencil portrait through careful observation and systematic drawing. Students actively participated in the hands-on exercise and practiced creating their own pencil portraits by following the demonstrated stages. The interactive nature of the session encouraged them to observe facial structure, understand proportion, and experiment with different pencil strokes and shading techniques. The activity also highlighted the importance of foundational drawing skills in areas such as animation, illustration, character design, graphic design, visual communication, and digital art.
