CAREER GUIDANCE PROGRAM CUM ALUMNUS INTERACTION ON “FUTURE IN HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY” ON 30.01.2025

The Department of Marine Catering and Hotel Management at Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science (Autonomous) organized a Career Guidance Program cum Alumnus Interaction on “Future in the Hospitality Industry” for first and second-year students on 30th January 2025. The resource persons, Mr. Barath Kumar and Mr. Muneeswaran, the esteemed alumni of the department, shared their insights on the diverse career opportunities in the hospitality industry. They emphasized how the industry offers ample growth prospects in various sectors like guest relations, housekeeping, and food & beverage services. Mr. Barath Kumar elaborated on his role at DRDO and the unique opportunities the government sector offers for hospitality professionals, while Mr. Muneeswaran shared his experiences at Taj Tirupati, discussing the standards and expectations of working in five-star properties. The program provided a valuable platform for students to interact with the alumni, learn about various career paths in the hospitality industry, and understand the skills required to succeed. This interaction boosted the students’ confidence and gave them a clearer understanding of how they can shape their careers in the growing hospitality sector. Faculty members and 50 students from the MC&HM department actively participated in the program

MEGA CAREER GUIDANCE PROGRAM ON “STEPPING STONE (FUELING AMBITIONS, SHAPING FUTURE)”

Program Objective

  • To provide students with guidance on career opportunities in the hospitality and culinary industries.
  • To equip students with essential skills like communication, professional development, and interview techniques for success in the workforce.

Session Report

The Mega Career Guidance Programme – “Steppingstone,” organized by the South India Chefs Association (SICA) in collaboration with RKG Ghee and Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science, Marine Catering and Hotel Management Department, was held on January 29, 2025. The event attracted over 190 students from various colleges in around madura and 72 students from MC&HM department. The program featured a motivational speech by Chef HimanshuShekharSahoo, who emphasized personal transformation for success. Chef N. SheetharamPrasaad presented on SICA and IFCA’s role in supporting culinary professionals, while Mr. G. Aravind shared his experiences in building a successful food business. A panel discussion, moderated by Chef N. SheetharamPrasaad, explored emerging trends and opportunities in hospitality. Other sessions included Chef Jesu S. Lambert’s preparation tips for food trade tests, a culinary quiz by Chef K. Nageshwaran, and career progression insights from Chef Nimish Bhatia. Academicians Dr. Chef M.S. Rajmohan and Dr. Chef Thirulogchander guided students on approaching the hospitality industry academically, and Chef ElangoRajendran provided technical industry knowledge. The event concluded with Mr. JibsonBivera’s session on communication and interview skills. The program offered students valuable guidance, leaving them motivated and better equipped to pursue successful careers in the hospitality and culinary sectors

INTER- COLLEGIATE & INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Department of Commerce participated in the Intercollegiate Meet organized by Mangayarkarasi College of Arts and Science for Women and the Thiagarajar School of Management, as well as the International Conference on Evolving Perspectives in Humanities and Social Sciences (ICEPHSS’25), organized by the Department of English, Kalasalingam University, on February 20 and 21, 2025. A total of 11 students from the First, Second, and Third Year (B.Com B&I) participated in the Intercollegiate Meet and International Conference.

  • Ms. D. Abirami and Ms. R. Kavidharshini of I B.Com (Banking & Insurance) received certificates for Fireless Cooking.
  • Ms. P. Shoba of II B.Com (Banking & Insurance) received a certificate in Reels Making.
  • Ms. K. Gopika, Ms. R. Hari Keerthana, Mr. V.V.K. Mithun, Mr. S. Karthick Harshan, Mr. M. Hemanarashimman, and Mr. E. Pranav Praghadeesvar of I B.Com (Banking & Insurance) received certificates for paper presentations.
  • Mr. M. Hema Narashimmen received an award for poetry.
  • Mr. P. Abishek and Mr. A. Angeshwaran of III B.Com (Banking & Insurance) won the first prize in the Quorum Quest (Business Quiz) event.

VALUE ADDED COURSE – TALLY PRIME

The Department of Commerce (B&I) conducted a value-added course on TALLY for the students of II B.Com- B&I over 8 days, from 12.02.2025 to 20.02.2025. The expert covered topics related to GST, Payroll, and E-Filing theories and practices in Tally Prime, making the session interactive and effective.

Outcome of the Program:

  • Students gained a clear understanding of basic accounting principles, such as double-entry bookkeeping, ledgers, trial balances, and how to manage financial transactions.
  • Students acquired the ability to use Tally to assist small businesses, freelancers, and large enterprises with their accounting needs, improving financial management and decision-making.
  • Students learned how to navigate and use the various features of Tally, such as:
  • Creating and managing different types of vouchers (e.g., sales, purchases, payments, receipts).
  • Understanding how to generate GST reports and manage tax-related entries in Tally.
  • Using Tally for inventory tracking, stock management, and valuation.
  • Managing employee salaries, deductions, and generating pay slips.
  • Creating balance sheets, profit and loss statements, trial balances, and other financial reports.

SSI Education Institute from Madurai conducted the session effectively for all 46 students in II B.Com (B&I). The students worked through more programs using Tally and became proficient in its use. They were motivated and inspired to consider a career involving the use of Tally.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO SAKTHI SUGAR FACTORY LIMITED, SIVAGANGAI ON 07.02.2025

The Department of Commerce B.Com (B&I) organized an industrial visit to Sugar Factory Limited, Sivagangai, on February 7, 2025. Totally, 37 students from II year B.Com (B&I) along with Mrs.V.Padmavathy, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce (B&I) and Dr.A.Devi, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce (B&I) visited the factory. The students were briefed on the various processes of sugar. The students were able to witness the production process of sugar in the factory. The visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to witness the real-time operations of a large-scale sugar manufacturing unit and to gain practical insights into the sugar industry’s functioning, management, and technological advancements. This visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application for the students of the department.

Outcome of the Program

  • Students gained a comprehensive understanding of how sugar is produced, from raw material reception to final packaging.
  • The visit helped students witness the technological innovations employed in modern sugar mills, especially in terms of automation, energy efficiency, and waste management.
  • Students were able to understand the various challenges faced by the sugar industry and how businesses adapt to changing market conditions and environmental concerns.
  • The visit highlighted the importance of sustainability in the sugar industry, especially in waste management, energy generation, and environmental conservation.

 

“AWARENESS ON UTILIZATION OF SHGS FUND TO SELF HELP GROUP WOMEN” AT SOLANKURUNI ON 06.02.2025

                                                                                        

              The Department of Commerce – B.Com (B&I) organized an extension activity (SLCS-Samaj-Seva), “Awareness on Utilization of SHGs fund to Self Help Group Women” at Solankuruni on 6th February 2025. The awareness program took place at Solankuruni, where Mrs. V. Padmavathy, Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of Commerce, led the session. Mrs. Padmavathy provided an in-depth explanation of the different types of funds available to SHGs, such as internal savings, external loans, and government grants. She also emphasized the importance of utilizing these funds responsibly to create sustainable economic opportunities for the women and their families. Additionally, the students of the department worked to raise awareness about the legal, ethical, and responsible utilization of SHG funds. They shared practical advice and real-life examples of successful SHG fund management to inspire and guide the participants..Totally, 5 students of I &II B.Com (B & I) involved in this program under the guidance of the Head of the Department and nearly 40 women got benefitted by this program.

Outcome of the Program

  • The “Awareness on Utilization of SHGs Funds for Self Help Group Women” program successfully achieved its objectives of educating and empowering SHG women.
  • The initiative not only helped the participants understand the importance of responsible fund management but also instilled a sense of ownership and accountability within the SHGs.
  • With the guidance of Mrs. V. Padmavathy and the active participation of the B.Com (B&I) students, the event fostered a learning environment that will have a long-lasting impact on the financial independence and empowerment of women in the Solankuruni area.
  • Moving forward, it is recommended that similar sessions be organized periodically, focusing on more advanced topics in financial management, to continue the support for SHG women in their economic empowerment journey.

Seminar on Investor Awareness Program

The National Stock Exchange and the Department of B.Com- Banking and Insurance organized a Seminar on Investor Awareness Program on January 31, 2025, for II B.Com students in Seminar. The session began with a warm welcome by Ms.Sai Sruthi, II B.Com Students, who introduced the guest speaker and handed over the session. Mr.R.Rajesh Babu, NCFE Empanelled Trainer, National Centre for Financial Education, Madurai, has been invited as the resource person. He provided a detailed description of the importance of financial literacy, investment strategies, and the fundamentals of responsible investing. This program aimed to equip students with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their personal finances and investments, laying the groundwork for future financial independence.. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Suriya Prabha, II Year Students. Totally 46 students of II B.Com B&I got benefitted.

Outcome of the Programme

  • Students were introduced how financial markets operate, including the importance of stock exchanges and regulatory bodies such as SEBI. They learned about the factors that influence market trends and the role of investors in the broader economy.
  • Students recognized the importance of starting to plan their finances early in life. Some even mentioned that they would start saving and budgeting more effectively as a result of the program’s focus on the importance of financial discipline.
  • The program contributed to improve financial literacy among young students, many of whom had little to no prior knowledge about financial markets or personal finance management.
  • Students were better equipped to make informed investment decisions and build comprehensive financial plans for their future.

 

Seminar on Financial Literacy Program

       The National Centre for Financial Education and the Department of B.Com-Banking and Insurance organized a seminar on the Financial Literacy Program on January 31, 2025, for I B.Com students in Seminar Hall. The session began with a warm welcome delivered by Ms.Sai Sruthi, II B.Com Students, who introduced the guest speaker and handed over the session., Mr.R.Rajesh Babu, NCFE Empanelled Trainer, National Centre for Financial Education, Madurai has been invited as the resource person. He provided a detailed description of the program to provide a comprehensive understanding of investment basics: identity theft, responsible use of credit cards, education loan borrowing principles, how to avoid impulsive buying, let’s go cashless, and your first pay cheque. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Suriya Prabha, II Year Students. Totally, 66 students of I B.Com B&I got benefitted.

Outcome of the Programme

  • Students were able to learn foundational concepts like budgeting, saving, credit management, and understanding financial products such as loans, insurance, and credit cards. This program helped them to understand the financial world and make informed decisions as they entered adulthood.
  • The seminar instilled a sense of financial responsibility in students, teaching them how to prioritize spending, save money, and live within their means. This awareness helped them to make more mindful decisions with their money. Students were better equipped to make informed investment decisions and build comprehensive financial plans for their future.
  • Students were able to prepare face decisions like choosing a college or career path based on their financial situation, understanding student loans, or managing living expenses while in school or starting their first job.

VISIT TO SEED FESTIVAL – “VIDHAI THIRUVIZHA 5.0”

Objective of the visit:

  • To learn about sustainable gardening and farming practices.
  • To inspire inquisitiveness and interest in gardening and agriculture.

On July 17, 2024, the South District Farmers Federation, in collaboration with the Communication Department of Madurai Kamaraj University, organized a Seed Festival entitled “Vidhai Thiruvizha 5.0” at Roosa Hall, Madurai Kamaraj University. This event showcased an array of traditional seeds exhibited by farmers from various districts in Tamil Nadu. Students from the Food Science and Processing Management program actively participated in the festival, finding inspiration in the remarks made by Farmer Annawayal Kalimuthu, the Coordinator of the Seed Festival. He noted, “Sow the seed. Watch the seed. Even if the sower sleeps, the seeds do not sleep.”

The students engaged with numerous stalls, acquiring valuable knowledge regarding different seed varieties, food products and farming practices. After the event, complimentary seeds were distributed to both students and farmers. In total, 27 students from the first and second years, along with one faculty member, participated and benefited from the festival.

Outcome of the visit:

The students acquired knowledge regarding sustainable farming practices and learned about initiatives aimed at conserving and protecting seed diversity.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO NSR FARM FRESH

Objective of the visit:

  • To understand the principles and practices of cold storage and its importance in food preservation.
  • To learn about the safety protocols and procedures in a cold storage facility.

          On September 10, 2024, the Department of Food Science and Processing Management orchestrated an industrial visit to NSR Farm Fresh; an Integrated Cold Storage Infrastructure managed by N.S. Rathinam & Sons Pvt Ltd, located in Thadikombu, Dindigul District.

NSR Farm Fresh is distinguished by several unique features, including:

– A substantial storage capacity of 10,000 metric tonnes or 8,000 pallets.

– Multi-temperature storage capabilities.

– Advanced ripening technology.

– Precise monitoring and control of temperature levels.

– Utilization of environmentally friendly refrigerants.

– Implementation of barcode and Warehouse Management System (WMS) operations.

– Comprehensive fire safety measures.

During the visit, Mr. Pandi from NSR Farm Fresh extended a warm welcome and provided guidance throughout the visit. He detailed the entire process involved in the storage of food within the cold storage facility. A group of 26 students, accompanied by two faculty members, actively engaged in the exploration of the cold storage unit, ripening facility, and packaging area. The students observed the diverse array of food commodities stored at varying temperatures across different chambers, including butter, prawns, fruits, and vegetables at low temperatures, while skimmed milk powder was maintained in a separate section. Mr. Pandi further elucidated the types of packaging materials utilized, the importance of labeling, the shelf life of products, transportation, safety measures considerations. The visit proved to be highly beneficial for all participants.

Outcome of the visit:

The students demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the procedure and protocols associated with the storage of perishable foods. Additionally, the visit expanded their awareness of the diverse career opportunities available within the cold storage facility.
